Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word association. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good fit there. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
